My Journey towards financial freedom (Burnout… and Balance)
In 2015, I accidentally started on a journey to financial freedom—yes, accidentally. How does that even happen? Well, I became an accidental landlord. At the time, my first daughter was two years old, and with plans for a second child, we needed more space. Instead of selling the flat we lived in, we decided to rent it out. That single decision unknowingly planted the seed for future investments. But beyond collecting rent, not much else happened.
Until…
One day, a family member excitedly shared his grand plans to start investing in properties to achieve financial freedom. The moment I heard “freedom,” I was hooked. Say no more—I jumped right in.
A year later, a colleague told me about FIRE.
“FIRE?” I asked, puzzled. Why would someone be so happy about fire? Is she planning on burning something? That seems rather odd, dangerous and darn right irresponsible!!!
Nope. Turns out, FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. Ahhh, I see. Still a bit confused.
To clear things up, she sent me a podcast—ChooseFI https://choosefi.com/listen. And the more I listened, the more my mind raced. Wait… people actually retire before the state pension age? Hmmm, say less.
The Fascination Begins
From that moment on, I became laser-focused on reaching financial independence. I was determined to retire as early as possible. We lived frugally, saved aggressively, and cut costs wherever we could. I took on extra responsibilities in the office to accelerate my career, maximize every penny that came in, and learned how to invest.
The problem?
Balancing saving for tomorrow while trying to enjoy life today felt impossible. Our living costs were kept low, we DIY-ed everything, and I pushed my mind and body hard to grow my income. I barely rested. Sleep was a luxury I couldn’t afford. Self-care? Never heard of her, I basically ran myself into the ground.
Then, just a few years into this grind…
Oh-oh… Burnout.
Shocking, right? Who knew pushing yourself to the brink would result in your mind and body shutting down? Go figure!
Suddenly, I was struggling with brain fog, sleepless nights, teeth grinding, headaches, jaw pain—the works. My body was waving every red flag possible, but I ignored it.
Why? Because we hadn’t hit our FI number yet. I couldn’t afford to slow down. Or so I thought.
A Much-Needed Wake-Up Call
As I became more cranky, and snapping at my husband and kids, reality hit me hard: I needed to change my approach.
If I didn’t, I’d be too burnt out to even enjoy financial independence I was striving for our family to achieve. So, I started a new journey—I needed to redefine my relationship with our finance. I instead focused on self-discovery, balance, and well-being.
I began intentionally slowing down and learning to be kinder to myself. The race, after all, is not for the swift but for those who endure.
Over this phase of the journey, I realized something crucial: I didn’t actually want to retire early. What I really wanted was flexibility—the ability to work on my own terms, in a way that felt fulfilling and sustainable.
Thriving, Not Just Surviving
So now, instead of sprinting towards a finish line, I’m focused on finding balance in every stage of life. My goal is to enjoy the journey, and not fixate on the destination.
When I finally do retire—many decades from now—I hope to bounce into that stage of life with energy, passion, and excitement… not crawl into it, exhausted and depleted.
